Electrical Systems

Battery

Most modern car batteries are maintenance-free.

  • Keep terminals clean, secure, and lightly greased.

  • If your battery has filler caps, ensure the plates are covered with fluid and top up with distilled water if needed — but don’t overfill.

Lights

Check all lights (front, rear, brake, indicators, and hazard) before every journey.

Use reflections in windows or walls, or ask someone to help.

Carry spare bulbs and fuses, and replace any that fail immediately.

Headlights must be correctly aligned to:

  • Avoid dazzling other road users.

  • Provide clear visibility ahead.

All lights must:

  • Be clean and fully operational.

  • Emit a steady light.

Indicators must:

  • Flash at a steady rate (1–2 times per second).

  • Show the correct colour.

  • Be clearly visible.

Windscreen Washers and Wipers

  • Check that washers and wipers work properly.

  • Keep washer reservoirs filled — use proper screen wash for effective cleaning.

  • Replace worn or damaged blades promptly.

  • If fitted, maintain headlight washers to the same standard.

Carry spare washer fluid or clean water, especially in muddy or wet conditions.

Horn

Test the horn regularly to ensure it sounds clearly.

Use it responsibly to warn others — not to express frustration or alarm people unnecessarily.
