Fuel and Refuelling
Fuel Levels
Never let the tank run too low — it can damage the engine. Refill before the warning light comes on.
Carrying Fuel
Use only approved fuel containers. It’s illegal and unsafe to use anything else.
Motorway Driving
Before entering a motorway, ensure you have enough fuel or charge to reach at least the next service area — preferably more, in case of delays. High speeds use more fuel, and service areas can be far apart.
Fuel Types
Petrol Engines
Modern petrol vehicles have catalytic converters and must use unleaded fuel.
LPG and Natural Gas
-
Stored in pressurised steel tanks
-
Adds extra vehicle weight
-
Not all service stations provide LPG — plan your route accordingly
-
Use a sealed refuelling system
Electric Vehicles
-
Powered by an on-board battery pack
-
Must be charged at home or public charging points
-
Check your charge level before setting out and plan charging stops
-
Allow extra time for recharging
Diesel Engines
Modern diesel cars are fitted with:
-
Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) — to reduce emissions
-
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) — using diesel exhaust fluid to lower pollutants
Maintain both systems as recommended. Avoid spilling diesel — it makes the road dangerously slippery.
Never mix fuels. Check the pump before refuelling.
