Oils and Coolant

Engine Oil

Oil lubricates and protects the engine. Check the level regularly — ideally each time you refuel — and top up as needed.

How to Check

  1. Park on level ground.

  2. Locate and remove the dipstick.

  3. Wipe it clean, reinsert, and check the oil level.

  4. Follow your handbook’s advice on checking when hot or cold.

Vehicles with automatic transmission may have a separate dipstick for transmission fluid — check the handbook.

Oil Changes

Change the oil and filter as recommended by the manufacturer.

  • Wear gloves and wash off any oil immediately — it’s toxic.

  • Store oil safely, away from children.

Oil Use

Oil consumption varies with engine type, age, and driving style.

  • Don’t run the engine below the minimum mark.

  • Don’t fill past the maximum mark — it can cause leaks or damage.

If the oil pressure warning light comes on, stop safely and check the oil immediately.

Regular oil and filter changes keep your engine clean and efficient.

Coolant

Modern engines use a water–antifreeze mixture that prevents overheating and freezing.

  • Check levels frequently and top up as needed.

  • Look for high/low markings on the header tank.

  • Frequent top-ups may signal a leak — have it checked.

  • Test antifreeze strength annually, ideally before winter.

Never:

  • Remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot

  • Add cold water to an overheated engine

  • Overfill the system

Carry spare coolant if possible.
