Steering and Suspension

What to Watch For

If you hear knocking or rattling from the steering or suspension, or feel unusual vibration or looseness in the steering wheel, seek professional advice immediately.

Excessive movement or “play” in the steering may indicate wear or damage in the steering mechanism.

Power-Assisted Steering (PAS)

When the ignition is on or the engine is running, hydraulic or electric assistance should make steering smoother and lighter.

If the steering feels heavy or unresponsive, the power-assist system may not be working correctly.

Before driving, check that PAS is working:

  1. Apply gentle pressure to the steering wheel while turning the ignition on or starting the engine — you should feel a slight movement as the system activates.

  2. Alternatively, turn the steering just after moving off; heavy resistance suggests a fault.

Check the fluid reservoir regularly (with the engine off):

  • The level should be between the MIN and MAX marks.

  • Never run the engine without fluid in the PAS reservoir — this can severely damage the pump.

Suspension

Inspect shock absorbers regularly:

  • Look for leaks or damaged components.

  • Push down firmly on each corner of the vehicle — it should rise and settle without continued bouncing.

If the vehicle keeps bouncing or feels unstable, have the suspension checked.

Worn shock absorbers make handling difficult and can increase braking distance.
