Be Prepared

Reducing the Chances of Breaking Down

Preventive maintenance and regular vehicle checks are the best way to reduce the risk of a breakdown. However, even with care, problems like punctures or engine faults can still occur — so every driver should know how to deal with a breakdown safely and efficiently.

Common Causes of Breakdown

  • Failure to carry out recommended vehicle checks

  • Poor or irregular vehicle maintenance

  • Harsh or careless driving

Never ignore unusual noises or warning signs. A minor fault left uncorrected can quickly become a serious — and dangerous — problem.

Useful Equipment

Carry a small emergency tool kit in your vehicle. The following items are particularly useful:

  • Warning triangle (or other approved warning device)

  • Spare bulbs and fuses

  • Torch (with spare batteries)

  • Vinyl tape and wire

  • Jump leads

  • Tow rope

  • Pliers

  • Plastic container of water

You should also carry high-visibility clothing — a fluorescent and reflective waistcoat makes you more visible in both daylight and darkness.

Warning Devices

Permitted Warning Devices

Various devices are available to warn other drivers if you’ve broken down.
However, do not use them:

  • On a motorway

  • As an excuse to leave your car in a dangerous position

Advance Warning Triangles

These fold flat and take up little space. Carry one if possible and use it whenever your vehicle is causing an obstruction or is in a dangerous position.

Positioning the Triangle:

  • On a straight, level road — 45 metres (147 ft) behind your vehicle

  • On a winding or hilly road — where it’s visible before any bend or crest

  • On a narrow road — on the nearside verge or footpath

Always switch on your hazard warning lights as well.

Other Warning Devices

You may also use:

  • Traffic cones (preferably at least 4 in a line)

  • Collapsible cones or delineator posts

  • A flashing amber light (with other devices, not alone)

  • A flexible yellow sheet with a red triangle, as long as it does not obscure your number plate, lights, or reflectors

National Breakdown or Motoring Organisations

Joining a breakdown service or having breakdown insurance can save significant time and money.

Most providers will:

  • Recover you and your passengers to your home or destination

  • Charge an annual fee often less than the cost of one motorway call-out
