Breakdown on Dual Carriageways
What to Do if You Break Down
Some dual carriageways have safety features in case of a breakdown (In the same way as a motorway does). These include:
-
Emergency areas
-
Hard shoulders
-
Emergency telephones
If There's No Hard Shoulder
-
Move as far off the road as possible (onto a verge or lay-by)
-
Avoid stopping in unprotected lay-bys — they’re extremely dangerous
-
Use hazard lights and a warning triangle if safe
-
Move passengers to a safe place away from traffic
-
Keep animals secured inside the vehicle
Long grass can catch fire from a hot catalytic converter, so take care where you stop.
