Breakdowns on Motorways
Fuel
Before joining a motorway:
-
Make sure you have enough fuel or charge to reach your destination
-
Plan refuelling or charging stops using route planners or sat nav
If you begin to run low:
-
Pull into the next service area — never run your tank completely dry
-
Avoid running until empty, as it can clog your fuel system
If You Break Down on a Motorway
-
Try to reach the next exit or service area
-
If not possible, move left and stop in an emergency area or on the hard shoulder
-
Stop just beyond an emergency phone, as far left as possible
-
Turn your wheels to the left to prevent being pushed into traffic if hit
When Stopped
-
Switch on hazard lights (and sidelights if dark or poor visibility)
-
Keep offside doors closed
-
Move passengers out via the nearside
-
Keep animals in the vehicle unless necessary
-
Get everyone behind the safety barrier, away from traffic
-
Lock all doors except the passenger door nearest the barrier
Calling for Help
-
Use the emergency phone in an emergency area or on the hard shoulder
-
Follow the direction arrows on marker posts to the nearest phone
-
Never cross carriageways or slip roads
-
Face traffic when using the phone
-
Tell the operator if you’re disabled, elderly, or alone
If you can’t reach a roadside phone, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 and provide the marker post details near you.
Never:
-
Attempt repairs on a motorway
-
Place any warning device on the carriageway or hard shoulder
Disabled Drivers
If you have mobility difficulties:
-
Stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on
-
Switch on hazard lights
-
Dial 999 and ask for the police
-
Or use your vehicle’s SOS button
If you’re deaf or hard of hearing, register in advance for the 999 text service at emergencySMS.net
Waiting for Help
Wait behind the safety barrier, near your vehicle but out of danger.
Do not return to your car unless absolutely necessary.
If approached by anyone, ask for identification.
Emergency staff or traffic officers will:
-
Show an ID card
-
Know your details from the control centre
If you feel unsafe inside your vehicle, call 999.
Rejoining the Motorway
-
From a hard shoulder: build up speed, signal, and merge when it’s safe.
-
From an emergency area: use the provided emergency phone and follow the operator’s advice — they may close a lane to help you rejoin safely.
