Punctures and Blow Outs

Loss of Control

If you suddenly lose control or notice poor steering, you may have a puncture or blowout.

Stay calm:

  • Ease off the accelerator

  • Don’t brake suddenly

  • Hold the steering wheel firmly

  • Steer to the side and stop gradually

  • Move the vehicle clear of traffic

On a motorway, never change the wheel yourself — call for help.

On other roads, only attempt repairs in a safe location.

Changing the Wheel

If it’s safe to do so:

  1. Stop in a lay-by or designated parking area, well away from traffic.

  2. Use a warning triangle if near a bend.

  3. Switch off the engine and turn on hazard lights.

  4. Apply the parking brake and select first gear.

  5. Remove the spare wheel and jack (usually under the boot lining).

  6. Loosen wheel nuts slightly before jacking up.

  7. Raise the car using the recommended jacking point.

  8. Remove the wheel and fit the spare, tightening nuts by hand in a diagonal pattern.

  9. Lower the car, then tighten all nuts fully.

If your vehicle has a puncture repair kit instead of a spare wheel, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for a temporary fix.

Do not change a wheel on soft or uneven ground — the jack could slip and cause an accident.
