Lighting and Weather Conditions

Driving at Night

You can’t see as far, so rely on:

  • Illuminated and reflective signs

  • Road reflectors

  • Headlight glow on trees and buildings

Be aware that:

  • It’s hard to judge distance and speed by headlights

  • Bright lights can hide dimmer ones (like cyclists’)

  • Watch for pedestrians and crossings, and avoid distractions

Rain

  • Reduces visibility and makes headlights less effective

  • Slow down and match your speed to conditions

  • Wet roads increase stopping distances and risk of skidding

Tip: The road is most slippery just after it starts raining.

Don’t splash pedestrians — it’s illegal and inconsiderate.

At night, wet roads can reflect light and make obstacles harder to see.
