Lighting and Weather Conditions
Driving at Night
You can’t see as far, so rely on:
-
Illuminated and reflective signs
-
Road reflectors
-
Headlight glow on trees and buildings
Be aware that:
-
It’s hard to judge distance and speed by headlights
-
Bright lights can hide dimmer ones (like cyclists’)
-
Watch for pedestrians and crossings, and avoid distractions
Rain
-
Reduces visibility and makes headlights less effective
-
Slow down and match your speed to conditions
-
Wet roads increase stopping distances and risk of skidding
Tip: The road is most slippery just after it starts raining.
Don’t splash pedestrians — it’s illegal and inconsiderate.
At night, wet roads can reflect light and make obstacles harder to see.
