Built-Up Areas

Driving in Built-Up Areas

In town centres and residential streets:

  • Use dipped headlights at night.

  • Be alert for pedestrians, cyclists, and joggers, especially in shadows caused by street lighting.

  • Approach pedestrian crossings at a speed that allows you to stop safely.

Reminder: In built-up areas, a 30 mph (48 km/h) limit usually applies unless signs indicate otherwise.

Noise at Night

Be considerate to residents:

  • Avoid revving your engine.

  • Close car doors quietly.

  • Set or disarm alarms discreetly.

Law: Do not use your horn between 11:30 pm and 7:00 am in built-up areas, except to avoid danger.
