Meeting Other Vehicles at Night

Headlights as Warnings

The lights of other vehicles can help you judge direction, distance, and speed. When you see oncoming headlights, ask yourself:

  • How far away is that vehicle, and how fast is it moving?

  • Should I slow down as we pass?

  • When should I dip my lights?

  • How far ahead can I see before dipping?

  • Is there anything on my side of the road that could be at risk — or could put me at risk?

Examples include parked cars, cyclists, pedestrians, or unlit skips.

Using Full Beam

  • Dip your lights early enough to avoid dazzling oncoming drivers, but not too soon.

  • Always check the left-hand verge before dipping.

If You're Dazzled

  • Slow down, and stop if necessary.

  • Avoid looking directly at oncoming headlights.

  • Never retaliate by leaving your own lights on full beam.

On Bends

  • Left-hand bends: Dip earlier, as your lights will shine directly into the eyes of oncoming drivers.

  • Right-hand bends: You may not need to dip as early.
