Overtaking & Following at Night

Overtaking & Being Overtaken

Visibility is reduced, so take extra care. Only overtake if you can clearly see the road ahead and it will remain clear throughout the manoeuvre.

Do not overtake if you’re near:

  • A junction, bend, dip, hill, bridge, or pedestrian crossing.

  • Double white lines or other restrictions.

  • A vehicle turning right or overtaking.

If another vehicle overtakes you, dip your lights to avoid dazzling them.

Following at Night

  • Keep a safe distance and ensure your dipped lights fall short of the vehicle ahead.

  • Avoid using full beam on dual carriageways or motorways when other drivers are in view.
