Parking at Night
General Rules
Cars, light goods vehicles (up to 2,500 kg laden weight), invalid carriages, and motorcycles may park without lights on roads with a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) or less, as long as they:
-
Obey all parking restrictions
-
Are not parked within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction
-
Are parked parallel and close to the side of the road, facing the same direction as the traffic flow
On roads with higher speed limits:
-
Do not leave your vehicle without side or parking lights unless a sign clearly says you can.
-
It’s safer to park off the road entirely if possible.
-
Never park on the right-hand side of the road unless it’s a one-way street.
Headlights
Always turn your headlights off when stopped, even briefly. Leaving them on while parked is an offence — the glare can dazzle other drivers and may drain your battery.
