Your Vehicle Lights

About Your Lights

Your lights are your main source of visibility — for both seeing and being seen.

Always:

  • Keep headlights and rear lights clean.

  • Use headlights (dipped or full beam) at night as appropriate.

  • Use dipped headlights during poor daytime visibility to make your vehicle more visible.

You Should Also:

  • Check all your lights before and during long journeys.

  • Replace any faulty bulbs immediately — carry spare bulbs if possible.

  • If your vehicle is heavily loaded, adjust your headlight aim to avoid dazzling others.

Auxiliary Driving Lights

Extra driving lights may help illuminate the road ahead but:

  • They must only operate with main beam headlights and switch off automatically when you dip your lights.

  • You may only fit one pair of dipped headlights.

  • Front fog lights must not be used except in seriously reduced visibility (e.g., thick fog).

Junctions at Night

Brake lights can dazzle drivers behind. When waiting at junctions or in traffic, use the parking brake instead of keeping your foot on the brake pedal (unless it’s foggy).
