Fire & Electric Shock
Fire
Carrying a fire extinguisher can help deal with a small fire.
If you suspect a fire in the engine:
-
Pull over safely and stop immediately.
-
Ensure everyone exits the vehicle.
-
Call 999 or 112 for help.
-
Do not open the bonnet — this may feed oxygen to the fire.
-
If safe, direct the extinguisher through the gap under the bonnet catch.
-
If the fire is large, move well away and wait for the fire service.
Never take risks — fire spreads quickly.
If you smell petrol, inform emergency services immediately.
Electric Shock
If a vehicle has hit overhead power lines or electrical equipment:
-
Do not touch the vehicle or casualty until you are certain it is safe.
-
Use a non-conductive object (such as dry wood or plastic) to break contact if necessary — never use anything wet.
-
Only give first aid once the electrical supply has been disconnected.
-
Keep a safe distance from high-voltage cables and contact the provider (number is often on nearby poles).
