Fire & Electric Shock

Fire

Carrying a fire extinguisher can help deal with a small fire.

If you suspect a fire in the engine:

  1. Pull over safely and stop immediately.

  2. Ensure everyone exits the vehicle.

  3. Call 999 or 112 for help.

  4. Do not open the bonnet — this may feed oxygen to the fire.

  5. If safe, direct the extinguisher through the gap under the bonnet catch.

  6. If the fire is large, move well away and wait for the fire service.

Never take risks — fire spreads quickly.

If you smell petrol, inform emergency services immediately.

Electric Shock

If a vehicle has hit overhead power lines or electrical equipment:

  • Do not touch the vehicle or casualty until you are certain it is safe.

  • Use a non-conductive object (such as dry wood or plastic) to break contact if necessary — never use anything wet.

  • Only give first aid once the electrical supply has been disconnected.

  • Keep a safe distance from high-voltage cables and contact the provider (number is often on nearby poles).
