Incidents in Tunnels
If You Break Down
If you break down or are involved in a collision inside a tunnel:
-
Switch on hazard lights.
-
Turn off the engine.
-
Exit the vehicle safely.
-
Administer first aid if possible.
-
Call for help from an emergency point.
Vehicle on Fire
If your vehicle catches fire and can still move, drive it out of the tunnel if safe to do so.
If not:
-
Pull over and switch off the engine.
-
Leave the vehicle immediately.
-
Use an available extinguisher if safe.
-
If the fire spreads, move quickly to the nearest emergency exit.
-
Call for help from an emergency point.
If another vehicle is on fire ahead:
-
Turn on your hazard lights.
-
Follow the same safety procedure.
-
Provide first aid to the injured if it’s safe to do so.
Many tunnels have specific safety instructions — follow them and inform the tunnel control room of your location as soon as possible.
