The Junction Routine

Following a Routine

At every junction, follow a routine such as Mirrors – Signal – Manoeuvre (MSM) and Position – Speed – Look (PSL).

MSM/PSL Routine

  • M – Mirrors: Check your mirrors to assess both the speed and position of vehicles behind.

  • S – Signal: Give a clear signal in good time.

  • M – Manoeuvre: Use the PSL steps below.

  • P – Position: Move your vehicle into the correct position early so other road users understand your intentions.

  • S – Speed: Adjust your speed as necessary for safety.

  • L – Look: Observe all directions when you reach a point with a clear view.

Then:

  1. Assess the situation

  2. Decide whether to go or wait

  3. Act accordingly

If the Road has Lane Markings

  • Use the correct lane for your intended direction.

  • Move into it as soon as it’s safe.

Defensive Driving

Where your path crosses or joins others, the risk of collision increases if you don’t look and assess correctly.

Always check your mirrors—especially for cyclists and motorcyclists—when turning. These road users are smaller, faster, and harder to see.
