Turning

Turning Left

Use the MSM/PSL routine on approach.

Position

Keep your vehicle well to the left.

Speed on Approach

Left turns are often sharper than right turns.

  • Slow down sufficiently.

  • Select the correct gear.

If you approach too fast, you may swing wide and end up on the wrong side of the road.

Watch for Other Vehicles

Be alert for:

  • Vehicles stopping or parked just before or around the junction.

  • Vehicles approaching from the side road.

Pedestrians and Cyclists

  • Give way to pedestrians waiting or already crossing—they have priority.

  • Watch for cyclists on your left and when crossing cycle tracks or bus lanes.

  • Allow cyclists to clear the junction before turning.

  • Never overtake and immediately turn across their path.

Avoid steering too early or sharply; your rear wheel could clip the kerb.

After the Turn

  • Check mirrors to see what’s behind.

  • Accelerate safely as you leave the junction.

  • Ensure your signal has cancelled.

Turning Right

Use the MSM/PSL routine on approach.

Position

  • Move into the correct position early.

  • Keep close to the centre line where safe, allowing others to pass on the left.

  • In a one-way street, move to the right-hand side when appropriate.

Speed

  • Reduce speed in good time.

  • Approach at a safe, controlled speed.

Watch for

  • Oncoming traffic, especially motorcyclists and cyclists.

  • Vehicles overtaking oncoming traffic.
If in doubt about crossing safely, wait.

Emerging Vehicles

Be alert for vehicles waiting to pull out from the minor road.

Pedestrians

Give way to pedestrians waiting or crossing the minor road—they have priority.

Obstructions

Check for anything that could block your turn or leave you stranded on the wrong side.
Do not cross the centre line until you’re sure you can complete the turn safely.

Turning

  • Check mirrors for overtaking traffic one last time.

  • Do not cut the corner or accelerate harshly.

Missed Turn

If you miss your turning, don’t stop suddenly. Continue and turn around safely at the next opportunity.
