Parking
Where to Park
Whenever possible, park off the road or in a car park.
If you must park on the road, ensure it’s:
-
Safe
-
Legal
-
Convenient
Road Signs and Markings
Look for restrictions near:
-
Pedestrian crossings
-
School entrances
-
Junctions
-
Loading or clearway zones
Never use hazard lights as an excuse to stop illegally, and never copy bad examples from other drivers.
Parking on the Road
-
Use the MSM routine and signal if necessary.
-
Park parallel and close to the kerb—don’t scrape your tyres.
-
Leave enough space for others, especially Blue Badge holders.
-
Switch off your engine, lights, and apply the parking brake.
-
Don’t obstruct the road or block access for emergency vehicles.
Parking Considerately
-
Never block driveways, lowered kerbs, or disabled access.
-
Avoid parking on pavements—it’s illegal in London and inconsiderate elsewhere.
-
Only park on verges or footways where signs specifically allow it.
Parking on Hills
Facing Uphill
-
Turn wheels toward the road (right) if there’s a kerb.
-
Turn left if there’s no kerb.
-
Leave in first gear with the parking brake on.
Facing Downhill
-
Turn wheels toward the kerb.
-
Leave in reverse gear with the parking brake on.
Leave extra space between vehicles for safety and easier manoeuvring.
Reverse Parking
Reverse parking uses the car’s tight turning circle in reverse gear to fit into small spaces.
Positioning
-
Stop parallel to the car ahead of the space.
-
Use reverse gear and check all around.
-
Reverse slowly, turning the wheel toward the space.
-
Watch both front and rear corners.
Straighten the steering when your car is parallel with the kerb.
If another vehicle stops too close behind, move on and find another space.
Parking Assist Technology
Many modern cars use sensors or cameras to help with parking.
These aids are helpful but should never replace careful observation.
Car Parks
Follow arrow markings and lane signs.
-
Use dipped headlights in indoor or underground car parks.
-
Move slowly and watch for pedestrians.
Reverse Parking
Usually safest—gives you a better view when leaving, especially at night.
Forward Parking
Used mainly for loading bays or special layouts.
Take extra care when reversing out, as your view will be limited.
Always park squarely within the lines, drive slowly, and check mirrors before entering or leaving a space.
