Turning Around
The Methods
There are three main methods:
-
Using a side road
-
Turning in the road (three-point turn)
-
Making a U-turn
The safest method is usually to use a side road. Alternatively, drive around a block of side streets.
On Narrow or Busy Roads
It’s safer to:
-
Find a side road and reverse into a turning from it
-
Avoid reversing into a main road
-
Only reverse when it’s safe, even if it means asking someone to guide you
-
Never reverse further than necessary—it’s illegal and unsafe
-
Always be prepared to give way and stop
Driveways
Whenever possible, reverse into your own driveway so that you can drive out forwards.
Never use someone else’s driveway to turn around—drive on until you find a suitable side street.
Reversing into a Side Road (Left or Right)
Choosing a Side Road
-
Use the MSM (Mirror–Signal–Manoeuvre) routine on approach.
-
If signalling, don’t indicate too early—you may confuse others.
-
Stop close and parallel to the kerb.
-
Apply the parking brake and select neutral.
Starting the Manoeuvre
-
Turn slightly in your seat for better visibility.
-
Select reverse gear and find the biting point.
-
Check all around—front, sides, and behind.
-
Reverse slowly, steering towards the direction you want the rear to move.
-
Keep the vehicle parallel to the kerb when finished.
Continuous Observation
-
Watch for passing traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
-
Be particularly careful as the front of your car swings out—it may pose a hazard to others.
Turning in the Road
Used when no side road is available.
Before You Start
-
Choose a wide, clear space with good visibility.
-
Stop on the left.
-
Select first gear, check all around, and wait for a safe gap.
The Manoeuvre
-
Move forward slowly, steering briskly to the right until nearly at right angles.
-
Steer left just before reaching the far kerb and stop.
-
Reverse slowly, steering fully left, checking all around.
-
As you near the rear kerb, steer right and stop.
-
Drive forward again when safe, straightening up on the left-hand side.
Throughout, use the clutch smoothly, move slowly, and keep constant observation.
Making a U-Turn
A U-turn means turning around without reversing.
Never make a U-turn:
-
On a motorway
-
In a one-way street
-
Where prohibited by signs
Before Turning
Ask yourself:
-
Is it safe?
-
Is it legal?
-
Is it convenient?
-
Is the road wide enough?
If unsure—don’t attempt it.
Observation
-
Check all around, especially your blind spots
-
Be aware that other drivers won’t expect a U-turn
-
Avoid mounting the kerb
