Mirrors and Hazards

What is a Hazard?

A hazard is anything that may require you to change speed or direction.

Examples include:

  • Bends or junctions

  • Pedestrian crossings

  • Roadworks

  • Animals or livestock on the road

When approaching a hazard:

  • Check your mirrors early.

  • Decide whether you need to signal, slow down, or change course.

Keeping Up to Date

A good driver always knows what’s happening behind as well as ahead.

Traffic conditions can change quickly — especially on fast or busy roads.

Frequent mirror checks help you stay aware of approaching vehicles.

On high-speed roads such as motorways or dual carriageways, check your mirrors earlier than you would on ordinary roads.

At higher speeds, situations develop faster, and accurate judgement is essential.
