MSM Routine

What is a Hazard?

A hazard is anything that may require you to change speed or direction.

Examples include:

  • Bends or junctions

  • Pedestrian crossings

  • Roadworks

  • Animals or livestock on the road

When approaching a hazard:

  • Check your mirrors early.

  • Decide whether you need to signal, slow down, or change course.

Always Use MSM Before

  • Moving off

  • Signalling

  • Changing direction or lane

  • Turning left or right

  • Overtaking

  • Slowing down or stopping

Never

  • Signal without checking your mirrors first
  • Rely only on mirrors when reversing — always look around

  • Assume other drivers have seen or understood your signal

Key Point

Safe driving depends on awareness, anticipation, and action.

Your mirrors are your eyes to the rear — use them early, use them often, and always act wisely on what they show.
