Leaving the Motorway

Planning Your Exit

  • Move into the left-hand lane well before your exit.

  • Use signs and countdown markers to prepare.

  • Follow the MSM/PSL routine when changing lanes.

  • Avoid cutting across multiple lanes or exiting at the last second.

Countdown Markers

You’ll see markers at:

  • 300 yards (270 m)

  • 200 yards (180 m)

  • 100 yards (90 m) before the slip road

Speed on Exit

Motorway speeds can distort your sense of speed—40 mph may feel like 20 mph.

  • Check your speedometer regularly.

  • Slow down smoothly as you approach the slip road or link road.

  • Expect sharp bends and possible queues at roundabouts or lights.

If You Miss Your Exit

Do not stop or reverse. Continue to the next junction and rejoin your route safely.

End of Motorway

When you see the ‘End of Motorway’ sign:

  • Be alert for new road rules (e.g. speed limits, two-way traffic).

  • Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users who aren’t allowed on motorway
