# Leaving the Motorway

## Planning Your Exit

- Move into the **left-hand lane** well before your exit.
- Use signs and countdown markers to prepare.
- Follow the **MSM/PSL** routine when changing lanes.
- Avoid cutting across multiple lanes or exiting at the last second.

## Countdown Markers

You’ll see markers at:

- 300 yards (270 m)
- 200 yards (180 m)
- 100 yards (90 m) before the slip road

## Speed on Exit

Motorway speeds can distort your sense of speed—40 mph may feel like 20 mph.

- Check your speedometer regularly.
- Slow down smoothly as you approach the slip road or link road.
- Expect sharp bends and possible queues at roundabouts or lights.

## If You Miss Your Exit

Do **not** stop or reverse. Continue to the next junction and rejoin your route safely.

## End of Motorway

When you see the **‘End of Motorway’** sign:

- Be alert for new road rules (e.g. speed limits, two-way traffic).
- Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users who aren’t allowed on motorway
