Motorway Signs and Signals

Approaching the Motorway

Direction signs from ordinary roads to motorways have white lettering on blue backgrounds, sometimes within larger multi-coloured signs.

On the Motorway

You’ll see:

  • Advance direction signs

  • Countdown markers before exits

  • Service area information signs

  • Brown tourist signs for attractions accessible from the next exit

These signs are larger than normal road signs so they can be read from a distance — a reminder to allow extra room and time for manoeuvres.

Speed Limit Signs

  • Red circle signs show mandatory speed limits — you must not exceed them.

  • Black and white rectangular signs show recommended maximum speeds.

Motorway Signals

Electronic signals warn of hazards such as:

  • Collisions

  • Fog or ice

  • Roadworks or lane closures

  • Stationary traffic

Flashing Amber Lights

Amber flashing lights or signs warn of hazards ahead.
They may also display temporary speed limits. You should:

  • Slow down to the shown speed.

  • Be prepared to reduce speed further if necessary.

  • Only return to normal speed once signs show “END” or a national speed limit, and it’s safe to do so.

Red Flashing Lights

A red X above a lane means it’s closed — you must not drive in that lane.
If red flashing lights appear across all lanes, the entire carriageway is closed.
Do not pass the signal or use the hard shoulder unless directed by police or traffic officers.
These closures are legally enforced.
