Overtaking
Before You Overtake
Always leave a safe gap before overtaking.
Use the MSM/PSL routine (Mirrors – Signal – Manoeuvre / Position – Speed – Look):
-
Mirrors – Check behind for faster traffic.
-
Position – Move out smoothly without sudden movements.
-
Speed – Ensure you can accelerate safely to overtake.
-
Look – Check ahead for lane closures, slower traffic, or other hazards.
Remember LADA:
Look – Assess – Decide – Act only when it’s safe.
Be especially aware of motorcyclists—they can be hard to see and may approach quickly.
Overtaking Safely
-
Signal early and pull out smoothly.
-
Pass promptly and return to the left lane once it’s safe.
-
Don’t cut in too soon after overtaking.
-
Always ensure your indicator cancels after the manoeuvre.
Overtaking on the Left
You must not overtake on the left, unless traffic is moving in queues and the lane to your right is moving more slowly.
Overtaking in Heavy Traffic
If overtaking is delayed by slower vehicles:
-
Be patient—don’t tailgate or flash headlights.
-
Wait until it’s safe to pass.
-
Never use the hard shoulder to overtake unless instructed by road signs or police officers.
Defensive Driving
Let faster drivers pass without confrontation.
Do not try to enforce speed limits by blocking others.
Always prioritise safety and avoid aggression.
