Roadworks

Approaching Roadworks

  • Reduce your speed early when warned by signs or flashing lights.

  • Get into the correct lane in good time.

  • Where lanes merge, merge in turn rather than forcing your way in.

  • Stick to the speed limit—roadworks can make speeds feel slower than they are.

  • Watch for road workers, who may need to cross live lanes.

Driving Through Roadworks

  • Obey all speed limits and lane instructions.

  • Maintain a safe following distance.

  • Avoid sudden braking or lane changes.

  • Stay alert—road workers and vehicles may appear unexpectedly.

  • Give extra space to vehicles displaying amber warning lights—they may turn or stop suddenly.

Breakdowns in Roadworks

If you break down:

  • Move into a refuge area if available.

  • Look for signs indicating a dedicated recovery service.

  • Wait safely for assistance—don’t attempt repairs near live traffic.

Leaving Roadworks

  • Keep within the speed limit until you’re clear of the cones and signs.

  • Be alert for road workers’ vehicles exiting the site.

  • Only accelerate once you’re sure the road is clear.

Mobile Roadworks

Some maintenance work is carried out using slow-moving vehicles with large directional arrows.

  • Follow the direction shown.

  • There are no cones, so reduce your speed and give extra space.

Contraflow Systems

Contraflow systems temporarily carry traffic in both directions on the same carriageway during repairs or upgrades.

  • Lanes are narrower than usual and separated by red and white posts or bright green/yellow studs.

  • Expect:

    • Reduced speed limits

    • Lane-change signs

    • No hard shoulder

    • Vehicles slowing or stopping unexpectedly

Always stay alert and keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
