The Novice Driver
After Passing Your Test
Motorways are statistically safer than other roads, but they demand greater awareness and faster decision-making.
After passing your driving test, it’s strongly recommended that you:
-
Take additional motorway driving instruction with a qualified professional
-
Practise on quieter motorway sections until you’re confident
-
Get comfortable driving at 60–70 mph (96–112 km/h)
-
Learn to maintain safe separation and merge smoothly into fast-moving traffic
Learner Drivers
Learners can now drive on motorways only if:
-
They are accompanied by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI)
-
The car has dual controls
-
The vehicle displays L plates
Further Training
Consider joining the Pass Plus scheme — it includes advanced motorway driving modules and helps improve confidence and safety.
