Traffic Control on Motorways
Traffic Management Systems
Some motorways use smart traffic systems to manage flow and reduce congestion:
-
Variable speed limits appear on overhead signs within red circles. These are legally enforceable.
-
The hard shoulder may sometimes be used as a running lane during busy periods.
-
Emergency areas with phones are placed roughly every 2.5 km.
-
Follow overhead signs carefully—they indicate lane closures, speed limits, and incidents ahead.
If you see a red X above a lane, you must not use that lane.
The hard shoulder may only be used when a speed limit is shown above it, or in emergencies if it displays a red X or is blank.
