Separation Distance
The Purpose of Separation Distance
Collisions often occur when drivers follow too closely.
Always maintain a safe separation distance suited to speed and conditions.
-
In free-flowing traffic, keep at least the overall stopping distance for your speed.
-
In slow-moving urban traffic, you may not always manage this, but never reduce the gap to less than your thinking distance — and leave more if the road is slippery.
The Two-Second Rule
In good, dry conditions:
-
Stay at least two seconds behind the vehicle ahead.
In wet weather: -
Double it to four seconds.
In icy conditions: -
Leave at least 20 seconds.
How to Check
-
Choose a fixed object ahead (e.g. a sign, tree, or bridge).
-
When the vehicle in front passes it, say:
“Only a fool breaks the two-second rule.” -
If you pass the object before you finish saying it, you’re too close — ease back.
If another vehicle moves into your gap, slow down and re-establish the safe distance.
