Starting an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE)

Starting the Engine

Once you’ve completed your checks and are seated comfortably:

  1. Make sure the parking brake is on.

  2. Check that the gear lever is in neutral (or ‘P’/‘N’ for automatics).

  3. Press and hold the clutch pedal (if required).

    • For key ignition: Turn the key to switch on the ignition — the ignition and oil pressure lights should appear. Wait for the glow-plug light (diesel engines) to go out, then turn the key further to start.

    • For button start: Press the starter switch as directed by the manufacturer.

  4. Release the key or button as soon as the engine starts to avoid damaging the starter.

If the engine doesn’t start:

  • Release the key or button, wait a moment, then try again.

When running, the engine should idle smoothly, and the warning lights should go out.

If the oil pressure or ignition light stays on, switch off immediately and have the issue checked — driving could damage the engine.

Move off as soon as possible; idling wastes fuel and increases emissions.

Electric & Hybrid Vehicles

Electric and hybrid vehicles operate differently. Electric motors are silent and don’t idle — only the dashboard display confirms that the vehicle is “ready.”

In hybrids, the engine may start and stop automatically depending on driving conditions.
