Loading Your Vehicle
Carrying Loads Safely
As a driver, you are responsible for ensuring that your vehicle is not overloaded.
Never exceed the manufacturer’s weight limits — doing so can be dangerous and will cause your engine to work harder, increasing fuel consumption.
Securing Your Load
You must make sure that any load you carry:
-
Is fastened securely
-
Does not block your view
-
Does not stick out dangerously
Always secure any objects or animals you transport.
-
Dogs should be restrained with a special car harness or placed behind a grille.
-
Other animals should be carried in cages or travel boxes, safely secured with a seat belt.
-
Packages should be stored securely — preferably in the boot — and strapped down or wedged so they cannot move.
If you need to carry items inside the vehicle:
-
Use the seat belt to strap down large or heavy objects
-
Keep your view clear — don’t place items where they obstruct visibility
-
Never store items in the driver’s footwell. If you place anything on the floor, ensure it cannot roll around during the journey.
Adjusting for Heavy Loads
Carrying a heavy load affects how your vehicle handles. Always:
-
Allow extra stopping distance
-
Adjust your headlights and increase tyre pressure to suit the load
-
Distribute weight evenly, as uneven loading affects braking and steering
Additional Equipment
Consider fitting:
-
A roof box, designed to carry bulky items securely and reduce fuel consumption
-
Cycle racks, mounted on the roof or rear of the car. If fitted to the back, ensure number plates and lights remain visible.
