Ensuring Your Vehicle is Roadworthy
Before driving, you must make sure that your vehicle:

Is legally roadworthy

Is insured for you to drive

Has a valid MOT certificate, if required

Has up-to-date vehicle tax
Key Components to Check
Braking System
Your vehicle’s brakes — including the parking brake (handbrake) — must be in good working order and properly adjusted.
Tyres
All tyres must meet the legal requirements for condition and tread depth.
Lights and Indicators
All lights, lenses, and reflectors must be clean, secure, and working correctly, even during daylight hours.
Exhaust System
A silencer must be fitted to keep engine noise at an acceptable level.
For cars and light goods vehicles, exhaust emissions must not exceed the legal limits. You can check the specific limits for your vehicle at any MOT testing station.
For optimum fuel economy, ensure your engine is tuned according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Instruments and Equipment
Your vehicle must have the correct mirrors fitted, and all instruments and controls must be fully operational, including:
