Roadworthiness

Ensuring Your Vehicle is Roadworthy

Before driving, you must make sure that your vehicle:

  • Is legally roadworthy

  • Is insured for you to drive

  • Has a valid MOT certificate, if required

  • Has up-to-date vehicle tax

Key Components to Check

Braking System

Your vehicle’s brakes — including the parking brake (handbrake) — must be in good working order and properly adjusted.

Tyres

All tyres must meet the legal requirements for condition and tread depth.

Lights and Indicators

All lights, lenses, and reflectors must be clean, secure, and working correctly, even during daylight hours.

Exhaust System

A silencer must be fitted to keep engine noise at an acceptable level.

For cars and light goods vehicles, exhaust emissions must not exceed the legal limits. You can check the specific limits for your vehicle at any MOT testing station.

For optimum fuel economy, ensure your engine is tuned according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Instruments and Equipment

Your vehicle must have the correct mirrors fitted, and all instruments and controls must be fully operational, including:

  • Speedometer

  • Horn

  • Windscreen wipers and washers

Vehicle Modifications

Be cautious with any vehicle modifications:

  • Tinted windows must not reduce visibility below the legal standard.

  • Modifications such as bull bars may pose a risk to pedestrians and should comply with safety regulations.

Disability Adaptations

If your vehicle has been adapted for a disability, ensure that all modifications allow you to maintain full, safe controlof the vehicle at all times.
