Vehicle Registration Certificate
V5C
The Vehicle Registration Certificate (V5C), often called a logbook, contains key details about your vehicle. It includes:
-
The name and address of the registered keeper
-
Information about the vehicle, such as its make, model, and engine size
-
The date of first registration
The Registered Keeper
The registered keeper is the person responsible for taxing and maintaining records for the vehicle, even if they are not the legal owner.
If you are the registered keeper, you must ensure the details on your V5C are accurate and kept up to date. You must inform the DVLA if:
-
You change your name or address
-
You change any details of the vehicle (e.g., colour or engine modifications)
-
You sell, transfer, or dispose of the vehicle
You can update your V5C online or by posting the relevant section to the DVLA. Once processed, the DVLA will issue you a new V5C. Keeping your details up to date ensures your V11 (vehicle tax reminder) is sent to the correct address.
When Selling a Vehicle
When a vehicle is sold:
-
Both the buyer and seller must complete and sign the relevant sections of the V5C.
-
The seller must send the appropriate part of the form to the DVLA.
Further information about the V5C is available on the form itself or at www.gov.uk.
Remember
-
The registered keeper must inform DVLA of any changes to their name, address, or vehicle details.
-
The registered keeper must notify DVLA when they no longer have the vehicle.
-
The V5C is not proof of ownership — it only identifies the registered keeper.
