Disabled Drivers

Thanks to advances in vehicle technology, many more disabled people now have the opportunity to drive. Most standard vehicles can be adapted to meet the needs of drivers with physical disabilities.

Vehicle Modifications

  • A wide range of adaptations is available to support safe and comfortable driving, including:

    • Hand controls for braking and acceleration

    • Steering and secondary control aids

    • Left-foot accelerator conversions

    • Clutch conversions

    • Parking brake devices

    • Additional mirrors

    • Seat belt modifications and harnesses

    • Specially designed seating

    • Wheelchair stowage equipment

    • Joystick or foot steering systems — for example, a four-way joystick can control steering, acceleration, and braking

    • Infra-red remote control systems that allow wheelchair users to enter or exit a vehicle independently

Driver Assessment

  • Mobility centres for disabled people can:

    • Assess driving ability

    • Offer guidance on suitable vehicle controls and adaptations for safe, comfortable driving
