Caravan and Trailer Safety

Security

Any load must be carried securely and within the size and weight limits of the vehicle.

The load must not shift or fall when cornering or braking.

Before Every Journey, Check

  • The caravan or trailer is loaded correctly, with the proper noseweight.

  • The coupling head is fully engaged and locked, and the breakaway cable or secondary coupling is properly connected.

  • Lights and indicators are correctly connected and working.

  • The jockey wheel is retracted and stowed.

  • The braking system operates correctly.

  • Windows, doors, and roof lights are closed and secure.

  • Tyre pressures are correct.

Tyre Maintenance

  • Check tread depth, sidewall condition, and signs of cracking.

  • Even tyres that appear unworn can deteriorate with age.

  • When storing a caravan long-term, raise it on supports to relieve tyre pressure.

  • Always fit tyres of the correct specification and rating (see your vehicle handbook).

  • Secure and turn off all fuel supplies, such as gas cylinders.

Riding in a Caravan

Never allow anyone to ride in a moving caravan.

When you stop for a break:

  • Lower the jockey wheel and corner steadies before entering.

  • Always raise them fully before driving off.
