# Towing a Horse Trailer

## Before Setting Off

Before setting out with a horse trailer, always perform these essential checks:

The **tow bar height** must match the trailer manufacturer’s specification.

- If the bar is **too low**, it can overload the rear axle of the towing vehicle and the front axle of the trailer, causing **poor control**, **excess tyre wear**, and **reduced braking efficiency**.
- If it’s **too high**, the weight shifts to the rear of the trailer, increasing the risk of **detachment**.

Ensure the **tow bar provides even weight distribution** between the vehicle, coupling, and trailer.

Grease and inspect the **tow ball** for wear — most hitches have built-in wear indicators.

If you’re unsure about the condition of your tow ball or coupling, **seek professional advice**.
