Towing a Horse Trailer
Before Setting Off
Before setting out with a horse trailer, always perform these essential checks:
The tow bar height must match the trailer manufacturer’s specification.
-
If the bar is too low, it can overload the rear axle of the towing vehicle and the front axle of the trailer, causing poor control, excess tyre wear, and reduced braking efficiency.
-
If it’s too high, the weight shifts to the rear of the trailer, increasing the risk of detachment.
Ensure the tow bar provides even weight distribution between the vehicle, coupling, and trailer.
Grease and inspect the tow ball for wear — most hitches have built-in wear indicators.
If you’re unsure about the condition of your tow ball or coupling, seek professional advice.
