Waiting Restrictions

Road Markings & Signs

Restrictions on waiting, parking, or loading are shown by road markings and signs.

  • Single yellow line: No waiting during times shown on nearby signs.

  • Double yellow lines: No waiting at any time, even if there are no signs present.

Small yellow plates on walls, lampposts, or posts provide precise details of the restrictions.

Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs)

When entering a CPZ, signs will show the hours of operation.
Inside the zone:

  • Yellow lines show where waiting is restricted (no additional plates needed).

  • White bay markings and upright signs indicate where parking is permitted.

Clearways

In a clearway, stopping on the main carriageway is not allowed at any time, not even to pick up or drop off passengers.

In urban clearways, stopping is prohibited during the hours shown — except for briefly setting down or picking up passengers.

Loading and Unloading

You may load or unload goods where allowed, but:

  • The goods must be heavy or bulky, requiring you to stop nearby.

  • Picking up small items like shopping does not count as loading.

Kerb markings (short yellow lines) and upright signs show when loading or unloading is prohibited.

Special bays may be marked “Loading only” for delivery vehicles.

Red Routes

In many large cities, Red Routes are used instead of yellow-line restrictions.

These routes are marked with red lines and signs showing where and when stopping is prohibited.

The aim is to keep traffic moving smoothly on busy urban roads.
